The Labour Party said today that it was incongruous that the government had decided to allow an investigation by the Auditor-General on Arms Ltd but not on the Smart Meters contract.

The contract, it said, was a major one, and it was closely linked to Arms Ltd. The fact that only one bid had been submitted for the contract reinforced the need for scrutiny.

The Prime Minister, however, had only agreed to publish some parts of the contract. The PL said one had to wonder what Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi was scared of.

It also observed that the Finance Minister had declared that the Auditor General’s report on Arms Ltd would eventually be discussed at the Public Accounts Committee, where the management could be questioned. This contrasted with the government’s objection to the questioning of present and former Enemalta personnel by the PAC in connection with the BWSC contract.
