New Labour candidate Rita Saliba has been elected from the first count in the San Gwann local council election, but will miss out on the mayorship, with the Nationalist Party having regained the majority in this locality.

Ms Saliba won 822 votes when the quota was 696.

Anthony Mifsud Bonnici, PL, was elected on the second count and Violet Bajada, also PL, on the fifth. PN's Joseph Agius was elected on the seventh count. Joan Farrugia, PL, was elected on the 10th count and Marica Davis, Etienne Bonello Dupuis, David Dalli and Neville Mallia, all PN, on the 11th.

The PN won around 53% of the vote.
