Labour MEPs Louis Grech and Edward Scicluna have been short-listed in two categories of the prestigious 'MEP of the Year Awards 2012' organised by  Parliament magazine.

Prof Scicluna is among three candidates nominated for the 'Economic and Monetary Affairs' category and Louis Grech, for the 'Internal Market and Consumer Protection' category.

Each short-list is based on a large number of nominations from NGOs, industry and fellow MEPs. The awards will be voted on by MEPs and be announced on September 25th in Brussels.

Prof Scicluna, who is the S&D group spokesman on eurobonds and the standing rapporteur on statistics, is described as "an important actor in financial policy", with the Parliament magazine adding that he had "championed citizens' increasing belief that social, environmental and economic indicators should be used to measure social progress."

Louis Grech, one of the main protagonists of the re-launch of the Single Market, having taken a holistic approach towards it, has been commended for "his continued work and initiatives aimed at ensuring the best possible situation for citizens". He has sought to put the rights and needs of citizens, especially those of consumers and SMEs, at the centre of Single Market reforms.

The two Labour MEPs said:

"Awards are not always the best measurement of performance but these nominations are a vote of confidence in our Parliamentary Committee work as elected representatives."

"Our two committees are among those with the highest workload in Parliament with a large number of policy experts from across the party groups. It is a privilege to be among the three shortlisted candidates in our respective policy fields."

"We believe that Malta needs representatives who can shape and influence decision making in Brussels. Being shortlisted for these awards demonstrates that Malta's representatives, and the Labour delegation in particular, are focused and committed."

"We are also pleased to see that Simon Busuttil has been nominated for his work on combating diabetes."

"We will continue as a Maltese Labour delegation to work in the interests of the Maltese people and Europe as a whole."
