Franco Debono, who is entitled to the title "The Honourable" (you can give it to him, if you like) has proved beyond reasonable doubt (a phrase with which, as a lawyer who works only in criminal law, he is familiar) that he needs to take a reality check, immediately if not sooner.

Here is why.

He thinks that his school report from 1987 (and it's the half-yearly one only, at that) proves variously that he doesn't need a shrink, that he is (Prime?) Ministerial material, that his should be the last word on all issues legislative, that he is an expert on broadcasting and public transport, that he is a high flyer (and therefore should have his every wish pandered to) and that, essentially, the sun shines out of his backside and we should all prostrate ourselves in awe while he disports himself on television.

The truth?

Here we have someone whose views are validated only by people whose grasp of appropriate behaviour is as faulty as his. Here we have someone who rants for ninety minutes at the press on a Saturday morning, thinking that they are lapping up his every word, not noticing that most of them are shaking their head, not in awe, unless you count awe at his sheer effrontery and unjustified sense of self-worth. Here we have someone who presumes, with an arrogance that is breathtaking, that he can tell the Prime Minister and the President what to do in the face of his petulant, childish, misguided and wholly baseless posturing.

Here, basically, we have someone who has gone back on his word, who has betrayed the trust shown in him by his voters and who has proved beyond a doubt that he suffers from the conviction that when he has a problem, it is everyone else's problem but his. He was not made a Minister, then it is not because he is clearly unfit to take office, but because he is the victim of a conspiracy, of the PM being held hostage by some shadowy cabal, because everyone else is too stupid to comprehend his astounding value.

Basically, Franco Debono wants to run things as only he knows how (God help us) and the fact that he was never appointed to any position of significance, not even when he was a candidate (apparently he wanted to be on some Board or other, any Board or other) - even with his 1987 report card in his support - is proof not of his utter unfitness for office (which he has now proved himself, thanks) but that the world is against him.

Watching someone commit political seppuku is amusing but Debono's behaviour has now gone beyond this: bolstered by Labour's cynical and opportunistic latching on to an internal problem of the Nationalists', Debono now thinks that he has become the country itself, and his issues are now of national importance.

Sorry to disappoint you, Debono, but your problems are always going to be the problems of a spoilt brat whose attributes are overshadowed to the nth degree by his many, many negativities and it's now time for you to take this on board and crawl into the oblivion of nonentity that you have created for yourself.
