Kuwait has formally informed the government that it intends to open an embassy in Malta in the nearby future. It will be manned by a resident ambassador and a team of diplomats.

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi visited Kuwait in April at the head of a delegation which included Foreign Minister Tonio Borg, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech and number of businessmen.

Kuwaiti Prime Minister Nasser Mohammed Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah visited Malta in August for the funeral of President Emeritus Guido de Marco, in an expression of gratitude for Prof de Marco's support, as President of the UN General Assembly, during the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq.

He had held talks with Dr Borg (picture) on trade, exchanges, investment and education and cultural relations. It had also been confirmed that hat Kuwait Airways is considering an air link to Malta.
