It’s Eurovision time so there’s no time for boring politics or thoughts of silly doom and daunting gloom.

I’ll be as curt as possible—impossible for me but I’ll just try, only to fail—so that we won’t waste precious time we need to prepare and pamper ourselves for the night of nights. Get out your “ġbejniet”,  insert into huge Maltese loaf with some local olive oil, swig a bit of DOK wine, and let’s swing and party in true Malta style. Now that our entry has made it to the finals we all anticipate it as one family, as one united, happy nation where all thoughts of political party squabbles are forgotten.

I will now solemnly make my prediction.

If the result is a good one—from victory to tenth placing will be seen as a great result—the leaders of our two main and enlightened parties will meet Kurt Calleja, on different occasions of course. They will shake hands and say that he is the embodiment of our youth and that our future with people like him is rosy. Besides smiling angelically both leaders will be dying to try out Kurt’s fancy footwork but even if they succeed I’m sure the spin-doctors will doctor that footage and we will never—great pity this— see it on our screens.

I hope AD will not get annoyed at me for leaving them out of this prediction but our green men have no time to waste on such silliness. They need a spin doctor to teach them to embrace silliness—therein lies the secret to those elusive votes.

Whatever the result is today—may our singer give a great display and may he win to make our dreams and our photo-ops come true. Go Kurt go.

PS: Sorry for the length of the piece—hardly curt is it? —and for the politicians who still managed to come stealthily into my piece. You can never shake them out of our system.
