Robert Kubica would love to see Kimi Raikkonen return to Formula One and become his team-mate at Renault.

Kubica this week nailed his colours to the Renault mast by signing a two-year extension to his contract after previously only joining the team on a one-season deal.

Kubica has this season underlined his status as one of the sport's top drivers as he has carried Renault this campaign, scoring 83 of the 89 points accumulated.

In his debut season, Renault's Russian rookie Vitaly Petrov has struggled at times, and notably is the only driver to have been out-qualified at every grand prix this year by his team-mate.

With Renault now an established marque again after the furore of the 'crash-gate' scandal that sparked rumours over their future, they may push for a more experienced team-mate for Kubica.

Raikkonen, who quit F1 last year for the World Rally Championship after being ditched by Ferrari following their swoop for Fernando Alonso, is so far remaining coy over his own future beyond this year.

Fuelling rumours regarding the Finn's possible return, Kubica said: "I've no problems with my team-mate, but if Kimi joined us it would be very good.

"He is a great, talented driver, so it might be a good driver line-up with him, but I don't know what will happen in the future, as to who will be my team-mate. It's still too early to say."

Kubica, though, appreciates Renault are lacking when it comes to having two strong drivers in the team, as is the case at McLaren, Ferrari, Red Bull Racing and Mercedes.

"It's much better in the current climate to have two good drivers as both drivers can help the team and each other," added Kubica.

"Without testing, and with limited running on Fridays, if you can have someone you can rely on for information and data, then it would be much easier for me.

"There is certainly no downside to having two strong drivers in the team."

In many respects, Kubica had no option but to re-sign for Renault, especially once Felipe Massa penned his own two-year extension at Ferrari last month.

At the time speculation had linked Kubica with a move to Maranello to link up with close friend Alonso.

But once that avenue was closed, and with the seats at McLaren, Red Bull and Mercedes nailed down for next season, Kubica quickly opted to remain with Renault.

"I made my decision four or five days ago. I felt that was the time to decide, especially as there was no deadline," said Kubica.

"There was no point leaving people wondering. For the team and as a driver you are looking for stability, so it was quite simple."

Kubica, though, knows there are no guarantees Renault will give him what he wants, which is a winning car.

"You can hope, but you have to be realistic because there is a long way to go to next season," said Kubica.

"We have to make sure we keep doing a good job this season, and we will try and build as good a car as possible for next year."
