The University Students Council (KSU) has called on the relevant authorities to discuss and review the system under which the students' SmartCard is managed.

The call was made in the wake of comments by the Auditor-General who found that many purchases using the SmartCard were not related to education. He also raised questions about inspections said to have been made by representatives of the SmartCard Board.

"KSU holds, that the SmartCard is an essential part of the capital input which is
given to students, and thus such system should be improved, monitored and
fine-tuned, to curb inefficiency," the council said.

"Throughout the year, KSU receives a huge amount of queries regarding the
outlets which accept the SmartCard as a means of payment, and such queries
cannot be answered as the SmartCard website has been inoperative for a very
long time. Moreover, there is no exhaustive list of items which are SmartCard
refundable, and this adds to further uncertainty in the system, and can lead to
abuses."

The council said it hopes  that such irregularities are rectified as soon as possible, as they are sure to taint the image of the SmartCard to the students' detriment.

"Such measures should be taken to protect the SmartCard system and its original goal, which is of being an indispensable tool which helps students finance their education," the council said.
