A KPMG report commissioned by the Nationalist Government during the electoral campaign showed that night tariffs were not feasible, Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi said this morning.

Addressing a news conference in St George’s Square, Valletta, he said that this could be seen from an e-mail dated January 17 in which KPMG informed a finance ministry official that night tariffs between 10pm and midnight would not be feasible as energy would still come at a very high cost. KPMG noted that night tariffs would only be feasible after 1am.

But in spite of knowing this, the PN forged aged with plans and promised night tariffs, deceiving the electorate.

The PN promise, Dr Mizzi said, had been based on the assumption that the interconnection would be in operation by next January.

However, the project was delayed.

Moreover, by March last year only 44,000 smart metres were in operation.

Asked whether night tariffs were still on the cars the minister said they were but would not elaborate further and pronounce himself on any deadlines or timeframes. He said it was still premature to do so at this stage.
