Prime Minister Joseph Muscat is insisting that Konrad Mizzi’s bid to open a bank account in Dubai and Panama were “standard enquiries” rather than formal attempts.

The fact that Dr Mizzi tried to open bank accounts in Dubai and Panama was revealed in the Panama Papers, a massive leak of documents that exposed the offshore holdings of 12 current and former world leaders and provided details of the hidden financial dealings of 128 more politicians and public officials around the world, including Dr Mizzi.

Dr Muscat skirted the question when asked whether he knew of these attempts, insisting that the most important thing was the independent audit that was currently underway.

He said that he did not discuss with Dr Mizzi and his chief of staff Keith Schembri matters related to their service provider, adding he was informed enquiries about bank accounts formed part of the standard service offered.

Asked whether he would accept their resignations if offered, Dr Muscat reiterated his decision would be based on the audit findings.

Dr Muscat was speaking after inaugurating a €4 million refurbishment at the Qawra Palace Hotel.
