The area in front of the Roman Villa in Rabat known as l-ghalqa ta' Kola is being given a tarmac surface, but care is being taken to preserve possible archaeological remains buried underneath, the Resources Ministry said today.

Resources Minister, George Pullicino said the site was being surfaced in order to block out dust, which was a health hazard and an inconvenience. The site will continue to be used for parking, although in a more organised manner.

Mr Pullicino said that after talks with the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage, it was agreed that a layer of gravel would be laid below the tarmac. In that way, it would be easier to excavate the site once a decision was taken to do so.
