A man armed with a knife and hammer escaped with some €300 from the Porto Azzurro Hotel lobby, in St Paul's Bay, in the early hours of yesterday.

The police said the incident happened at about 1.15 a.m. when the man entered the hotel and demanded money from the receptionist, a 59-year-old man.

The robber then forced open a drawer and stole the cash, before dashing out. The receptionist was not injured.

The hotel is in Ir-Ridott Street.
