Doctors have finished an operation to siphon blood from beneath the skull of Argentine president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner.

The surgery was carried out to relieve pressure on Ms Fernandez's brain two months after she suffered an unexplained head injury.

There has been no official announcement that the surgery has concluded, but Buenos Aires governor Daniel Scioli confirmed the operation has finished and said Ms Fernandez is recovering at the Fundacion Favaloro, one of Argentina's top cardiology hospitals.

"We have received first word that the president has come out of surgery and is recovering from anaesthesia," Mr Scioli announced. "Now we're waiting for the doctors' report," he added, wishing her a rapid recovery.
