We had a situation in Marsascala where a hunter was letting his hunting dogs off the leash and causing problems in the street.

The dogs were chasing the stray cats and trying to kill them. They were also barking in the early hours of the morning, waking us and the neighbours.

I was told "don't bother to tell the police", they will not act and will laugh at you. Well I am happy to say the hunter was recently told to keep the dogs under control as is his responsibility.

No one blames the dogs. We who live in this street are, for the most part, animal lovers. I have a dog myself but she is always in a harness and leash when we take her out.

I am glad I took it upon myself and to speak for others on the street in hope of getting this annoying problem solved. So well done to the animal loving officer from the Żabbar police station who lent his help.

I feed about five stray cats every day but I do it on my own porch at 5.30 a.m. and I clean up after them.

So do the other neighbours who feed them. With the help of friends, the cats are all neutered as well.

I put a few baskets on my porch so the cats have shelter from the weather. They are hurting no one. When the police came to check my porch they found everything in order and clean. I'm breaking no law or rule.

Cats do not have to be on a leash but dogs do. Many loving people feed the cats or stray dogs if they are in need.

Any person with a heart would help a starving animal and be responsible, as we are in my area, to get them neutered.
