I was saddened to learn from Salvinu Zerafa (August 24) of the problems on the picturesque Sliema front. As a winter visitor, I have not experienced this desecration. It is bad enough in Marsaxlokk at that time of year.

It has often been said that the Maltese are not fond of rules, laws and regulations and, if this is the case, this is the result.

There are many places for vendors to trade their goods, legally, at market sites and the like. If the authorities are relaxed about it, too lazy or have let this happen for “other” reasons, then there is little they will do to correct it.

The Sliema front has enough problems with uneven paving and kerb areas, large holes where trees are sometimes planted and dogs use as toilets, plus the mess from dogs that don’t use the tree toilets. I’m surprised that these fly pitchers can actually find a safe spot!

If the authorities do not act quickly, but they never seem to, we’ll have the problem that occurs on the other side of the road where many pavements are filled with chairs, drinkers and smokers that sprawl into the narrow path that was supposed to be left clear for walking along.

I hope this matter is resolved because to spoil such an area as this in this way will not help to attract the tourism that this lovely island deserves. If there is a demand for such services, maybe a regulated site close by can be found and rent paid to benefit and enhance the area.
