A horse-drawn carriage (karozzin) overturned in Mdina on Saturday afternoon, hurling four tourists to the ground.

Two of the tourists were taken to hospital in an ambulance after they appeared to have been pinned inside the carriage, while another two were taken to a health clinic, probably as a result of shock, the police said. The coachman escaped unscathed.

The horse was seen limping and is being inspected by a vet but police said he probably also escaped serious injuries.

Times of Malta witnessed the incident which happened around 12.30pm at the entrance to the city in Pjazza tal-Griegi.

Police are investigating whether a badly-parked vehicle could have led to the horse losing its footing as the carriage turned the corner.
