St Julian's mayor Karl Gouder will be taking up the seat vacated by Prof. Albert Fenech in Parliament, the Nationalist Party said this evening.

Prof. Fenech, a cardiologist, stepped down as Nationalist MP a few days ago to take on new professional engagements overseas.

The PN said in a statement the decision was taken during a meeting of the party's executive committee.

The selection process was made during a meeting of the administrative council and the PN's executive.

This will be Mr Gouder's second term in Parliament, where he served between 2010 and 2013, when he was the youngest MP on the government benches.

He will take his oath of office tomorrow.
