Work on the Kappara junction project is proceeding according to plan, Transport Minister Joe Mizzi told parliament in reply to questions this afternoon.
He told Labour MP Anthony Agius Decelis that work is focused on site clearance, rock cutting and the building of supporting walls for the new slip road near the national pool. The work is below road level and has not affected traffic flow.
Works are also in hand on the installation of new power cables to ensure uninterrupted power supply.
The fact that many North-South infrastructural services crossed this site was one of the complicated features of this project, the minister said.
Every effort was being made to ensure that traffic diversions were kept at a minimum and took place when traffic flow was at its lowest, such as when schools were closed, the minister added.
Transport Malta has prepared alternative routes and is informing the people through mail shots and the social media. New signage will also be installed shortly.
Mr Mizzi said he had no doubt that there would be some inconvenience, but this would be minimised if drivers opted for alternative routes in the first place. Over €3 million have been spent on improving such alternative routes, he added.
