The first major road closures in connection with the Kappara junction project will take place in the weeks starting on July 11 and July 22 when North-South traffic on the Regional Road will be shifted and Sliema Road will be closed, Transport Minister Joe Mizzi said in Parliament this evening.

He said alternative routes would come into play and motorists would be continually updated by Transport Malta.

90,000 cars flow round the Kappara roundabout every day.

The closures are required for the laying of new utility services and service ducts, the lowering of the level of the old roundabout and preparations for the building of the overlying bridge.

MORE NEW BUSES IMPORTED

The minister also said in reply to another question that Malta Public Transport, which operates the bus service, recently imported 33 new 12 metre buses which can take more than 100 passengers, reflecting growing demand for the bus service.

He said the newly-imported buses were over and above what had been agreed with Transport Malta and reflected the increase in commuters and routes.

The minister told Labour MP Anthony Agius Decelis that significant success was also being achieved in sea transport services between Sliema and Valletta and Cottonera and Valletta.
