An injured kangaroo hopped into an airport in Melbourne, shocking passengers as it made its way into a terminal shop.

Melbourne Airport spokeswoman Anna Gillett said officials are not sure how the animal got inside the Qantas Airways domestic terminal, where it made its way into a pharmacy.

The animal had been hit by a vehicle nearby and was bleeding.

Shop workers, Qantas staff and federal police contained the creature in the pharmacy for a couple hours before wildlife officers arrived. Two rescue volunteers tranquilised the kangaroo and took it to a vet for treatment, Wildlife Victoria said in a statement.

It is not the first time a kangaroo has paid a visit to Melbourne Airport. Last year, one was found bouncing around one of the airport's parking garages.
