Franz Beckenbauer has said he will be scaling back his involvement as honorary president at Bayern Munich to spend more time with his family.

Beckenbauer will turn 65 on Saturday and he told German television channel QB that he will be doing less work with Bayern to reduce the amount of travel he is expected to do both nationally and internationally with the club.

“I will be spending less time with the club and I will significantly reduce my involvement on the national and international travel,” said Beckenbauer.

Beckenbauer, affectionately still known as ‘The Kaiser’, said he does not want to repeat the same mistake as his first marriage, when he says he neglected the couple’s first two children.

He retired from his position as president of Bayern last year.
