A commission tasked with drafting recommendations for a reform of the the justice system will be announced tomorrow, the prime minister said today.

Joseph Muscat was speaking at a Labour meeting in Sannat Square, Gozo, to celebrate the Labour victory.

He said that the government had today given a signal of its intention to give birth to a second republic by having invited the opposition to join in the official celebrations of Freedom Day.

In his speech Dr Muscat referred to his call on the Maltese bishops yesterday . He said the government wished to have friendly relations with the Church while respecting the different, parallel but separate roles of the Church and the State. The government, he reiterated, would be writing to the Holy See informing it of its plans for the Civil Court to be sovereign and not subject tothe Church in marriage cases.

He also reiterated the government commitment to create jobs for the Gozitans in Gozo and to make life easier for students, such as by having exams held in Gozo instead of Malta.

He also told supporters who claimed to have suffered injustice that injustice would be corrected without causing fresh injustice.
