Justice Minister Owen Bonnici said today that in his view, court proceedings should be speeded up in the case against a woman whose evidence may have led to a man being wrongly jailed.
His view, he said, was motivated by the fact that an Inquiring Magistrate had said that a man may have been wrongly imprisoned.
The man, estranged husband of the woman who gave evidence, was released this morning by the Constitutional Court after serving 400 days of a two-year jail term on conviction of sexually abusing his daughter.
The minister stressed, however, that everyone’s rights, including the presumption of innocence and having a fair trial, should always be respected and the judiciary should be allowed to work in a serene environment.
