European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker wrote the foreword to the second edition of former prime minister Lawrence Gonzi’s recollections.

In the book, Malta’s break with Gaddafi, recollections of a premier, published by Kite Group, Mr Juncker describes his close relationship with Dr Gonzi, both having served as prime ministers of Europe’s smallest countries.

“Malta played a central role in Europe’s response offering logistical support for humanitarian aid and was a key node in the evacuation of thousands of citizens,” he wrote with reference to the Libyan crisis and Europe’s response.

Dr Gonzi had offered valuable political support and negotiated the release of two Dutch pilots held captive by Muammar Gaddafi’s forces.

“Throughout the crisis, Dr Gonzi followed his conscience displaying tenacity and compassion with the Libyan people,” Mr Juncker said.

The second edition of the book features four additional chapters in which Dr Gonzi reflects on the latest developments in Libya and its future.

This limited edition also has forewords by Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, the former chairman of the Libyan National Transitional Council, and former Libyan prime minister Mahmoud Gebbril.

Dr Gonzi and Joe Cassar, who co-authored the first edition, will be signing copies of the book on November 15 at 6.30pm at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta.

Pre-publication orders can be made via www.kitegroup.com.mt.
