An environment NGO this morning filed a judicial protest against Mepa and the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage objecting to the granting of a permit close to Ta' Hagrat stone age temples.

The permit, approved on September 6, provides for the demolition of a garage and its replacement by a house with garden.

The FAA in its protest said the development violated a buffer zone of at least 100m around the periphery of the world heritage site as laid down in the North West local plan issued by Mepa itself.

It was unacceptable, the FAA said, that a room used as a garage was replaced by a structure which was ten times as large and three storeys high, also impacting negatively on the aesthetics of the site.

FAA also pointed out that following another building application on an adjoining site, the superintendence had expropriated the land to stop the development. The same should be done in this case
