Judges and magistrates want their salaries to almost double, according to figures given on Bondì+ today.
Judges are eyeing an increase from their current €52,000 to €92,000 while magistrates want their €46,000 annual salary to be increased to €90,000.
If the proposed figures are taken on board, the Chief Justice's salary would increase from €59,000 to €100,000.
The figures, which were given to the programme by "very reliable sources", came after the members of the judiciary decided to boycott a number of events and spoke anonymously about their conditions needing improvement.
The programme featured Chamber of Advocates president Rueben Balzan who said the members of the judiciary deserved better salaries but not necessarily the ones they were proposing.
Traditionally, he said, ministers and judges had similar salaries. Ministers now earn €70,000 annually.
