Some 320 international broadcast journalists will meet in Malta this week to discuss the impact of social networks, livening political reporting and the impact of economic hard times on the profession.

The networking event, Newsxchange ’09, is being hosted by PBS and for the first time, broadcasters from China are taking part.

The event is being held on Thursday and Friday. Journalists and news agencies from Europe, the US, Hong Kong, India, United Arab Emirates, Canada and Australia will be present.

PBS chairman Clare Thake, Vassallo said among the subjects under the spotlight was the way the public bypassed traditional media in favour of Twitter and Facebook.

Another interesting debate tackles the future of broadcast news media, and the importance of grabbing viewers’ attention without losing sight of the role of the press in reporting political issues.
