The Institute of Maltese Journalists has decided to shift its journalism awards ceremony from November to May to coincide with World Press Freedom Day.

Institute chairman Malcolm Naudi said the move made the awards timely, as it was honouring journalists for the work they did during 2008.

The 19th edition of the annual press awards was launched on Saturday, and will accept entries in 13 categories from news and features to sports, photography and travel, among others.

This year also sees the introduction of a category for opinion writers, following a great deal of pressure from participants.

The winners will be awarded a cash prize of €350, a certificate, and the Malta Journalism Awards trophy for the respective category. The winner of the category entitled Il-Lingwa Nazzjonali fil-Ġurnaliżmu will be presented with the trophy for that category.

All the entries, whether in Maltese or in English, must have been published, posted on a news website, or broadcast in 2008.

Submissions will be received at the institute's offices, 104a, Old Mint Street, Valletta, on February 14, between 9 a.m. and noon.

Non-members have to pay a participation fee with the submission.

Regulations and applications may be obtained either by phoning institute honorary secretary Joe Vella on 2131 6958/9945 0746 or from the website:www.maltapressclub.org.mt.
