Kevin Bonello is to assume the reins of the Malta Union of Teachers after the union’s annual general meeting in June, having been the only person to be nominated for the post of president.

Mr Bonello, who is currently the senior vice-president, will succeed John Bencini, who is not seeking re-election. He has served as president for 15 years. The longest serving MUT President so far has been Alfred Buhagiar who served for 22 years.

An election still has to be held to confirm Mr Bonello.

Mr Bonello is a long-serving primary school teacher, best known for his service at Senglea primary school.

He has been an official of the MUT for the past seven years. He used to lead the youth section of the CMTU and is now active in the FORUM group of trade unions.

Mr Bencini will remain president of the FORUM.
