Vote counting has ended at Naxxar, with Labour candidate John Attard Montalto winning re-election to the European Parliament, having kept his lead over Joseph Cuschieri for Labour's third seat in the assembly.

Joseph Cuschieri will become an EP observer and formally become an MEP when Malta is allocated its sixth seat under the Lisbon Treaty.

The final counting at Naxxar counting centre - the 29th count - also confirmed Louis Grech as the top Labour candidate with Edward Scicluna coming in second.

None of the Labour candidates achieved a quota. With the distribution of votes inherited following the elimination of Marlene Mizzi, Mr Grech saw his final vote reach 40,529. Edward Scicluna had 39,250, John Attard Montalto, 30,129 and Joseph Cuschieri 29,375 votes.

Nationalist MEP David Casa were re-elected earlier. Simon Busuttil was re-elected on Monday.
