Malta had the second lowest unemployment rate in the eurozone in April, together with Austria and Luxembourg, according to the latest European Commission figures.

The rate, 5.7 per cent, is the lowest since Malta was in-cluded in Eurostat statistics.

The government welcomed these figures and pointed out that, on average, Malta’s unemployment rate had been 6.5 per cent between March 2008 and March 2013 – under the previous Administration – compared to 4.8 per cent in Austria and 4.9 per cent in Luxembourg.

The biggest improvement was registered in youth unemployment, which had declined to 11 per cent from 14 per cent in the fourth quarter of last year.
