The proponents of a nationwide appeal to safeguard the Jesuit-run Mount St Joseph retreat house’s mission have issued a statement to thank all those who offered help and support in the past two months to oppose the development of a 70,000 square metre shooting range in Busbesija, Mosta.

The government's discussions with potential developers have since been terminated due to financial considerations.

Jesuit Provincial Fr Patrick Magro Sj thanked the media, professional and non-governmental organisations as well as the thousands who called, messaged or spread the word to support their appeals.

"Our appeal to preserve the silent atmosphere offered by Mount St Joseph retreat house was made on behalf of all those who have used the house or will use it at some point in their lives - the house and the support individuals find there have been instrumental to bettering the lives of so many.

"The Government’s decision to turn down the shooting range project was based on financial reasons, however our appeal nonetheless had a very positive impact.

"We were all in this together and among the most special outcomes were the sense of solidarity, the strength to stand up and defend what we believe in, and the renewed appreciation of the precious role Mount St Joseph plays in Maltese society.”

Mount St Joseph retreat house is situated just next door to the site which had been proposed for the extensive shooting range.
