An average four jellyfish sightings are being reported every day as part of a campaign to identify the different types that swim around the islands.

So far, 300 reports involving nine species have been received since the project kicked off three months ago, most of them about the mauve stinger.

The Spot the Jellyfish Campaign is run by the University and the Malta Tourism Authority.

The initiative relies on the cooperation of the public, especially mariners and divers, to record the presence and location of jellyfish on a reporting leaflet which is being widely distributed and available online.

The jellyfish is matched with a visual identification guide, giving the date and time of the sighting and indicating the number seen.

Sightings can be also be reported at www.ioikids.net/jellyfishor, by text message on 7922 2278 or by sending an e-mail to ioi-moc@um.edu.mt.
