Two types of jellyfish-eating fish seem to be increasing around Malta, marine biologist Alan Deidun has reported.

"It is too early to be certain, we need scientific data, but I have been seeing more frequent reports of the presence of cawlun/pixxa luna (Brama brama - Atlantic pomfret) and the Cornish blackfish (Schedophilus medusophagus)," Dr Deindun told Times of Malta.

More of these two fish can also be seen at the market in Marsaxlokk, he added.

Both had been uncommon in Maltese waters, which was why the Cornish blackfish did not even have a Maltese name, he said.

The reason for the increase could be the increase in one of their food sources, which is jellyfish.

Jellyfish are also a source of food for the giant Mola Mola fish and turtles.
