A man has been jailed for a month after landing in Malta with an extra two passports intended for family but which had not been issued to them.

Somali national Abdi Ahmed, 39, arrived on a flight from Holland on Sunday and was stopped by customs officials after they noticed that he was very edgy.

On searching his luggage they found an extra two passports and when questioned by the police he confessed that they did not belong to his family members but the photos in the documents resembled them.

Mr Ahmed did not reveal if the relatives were living in Malta or were still in Somalia, police sources said.

During yesterday's arraignment, Mr Ahmed, still holding his luggage, pleaded guilty to attempting to make use of passports that had been issued to other persons.

When Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera said she was going to hand down a jail term, legal aid lawyer Patrick Valentino appealed for clemency.

But the magistrate remarked that her hands were tied and jailed Mr Ahmed for one month.
