A 37-year-old man from St Paul's Bay has been jailed for five years for drug posession, after the court considered that he had 30 previous convictions.

Jean Claude Cassar admitted to being in possession of heroin and trafficking for a month. The court said it did not result beyond reasonable doubt that the heroin found in his possession (38 grams) was not for personal use, but added that it took a serious view of drug trafficking.

In considering its sentence, Magistrate Marseanne Farrugia said the accused had only admitted to some of the charges because he had been cornered, and it did not feel he should benefit from a reduced punishment.

The court noted that the accused had had 30 previous convictions for various crimes and opportunities to reform had been ignored.

Cassar was also fined €3,000.
