Colin Vassallo, 33 of Siggiewi has been jailed for six months after a court convicted him of cultivating cannabis in 1999 and being in possession of cannabis resin.

Supt. Norbert Ciappara said drugs had been found in Mr Vassallo's car when it was stopped during a roadbloack. Cannabis plant was found at his home in a subsequent search.

In a separate case, Nikol Schembri, 48 of Birkirkara, was also jailed for six months after being found guilty of possession of just over 3 grams of heroin which was not for his exclusive use. The accused had denied trafficking or taking drugs and said the heroin had been given to him to keep for some time by an Arabic man whom he did not previously known. He had offered him €116 to keep it for him.

Magistrate Lawrence Quintano said the court did not believe the claim by the accused that the Arab man had asked him to keep the drug for one night, especially when the drug itself did not have a value of more than €120.
