Eighty people were handed down jail or detention terms for failing to pay agreed amounts of alimony.

Answering a parliamentary question by Carmelo Abela (PL), Justice Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici said the greatest number, 39, had been sentenced to one week’s detention.

There had been two weeks of detention for 11 people, one month detention for nine, one month jail for nine others, three months detention for six, two months detention for two and two months jail for two others, three weeks detention for one and two days detention for another.

Sixteen persons had been detained for failing to give access to children. Twelve had been given a week, two weeks for three others and one month for another.
