An Ivorian who was arraigned on Monday over aggravated heroin possession appeared in court again today after the police found a bag of cannabis as he was at the Corradino prison paying the bail deposit.

Before Magistrate Charmaine Galea, Mumen Traore Trabule, 35, pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him and was granted bail again.

Last Monday, the Ivorian was accused of possessing heroin in circumstances denoting it was not for his personal use during a spot check outside the Marsa open centre on Saturday afternoon. The capsule contained around 20 grams of heroin. He also had a small amount of cannabis.

Mr Trabule was also charged with relapsing and with breaching a probation order over a different case, handed down in November last year.

He has pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him. The court granted him bail against a deposit of €450 and a €7,000 personal guarantee.

When Mr Trabule went to pay his bail deposit at the Corradino Correction Facility, he was searched upon entry - as is the usual practice - and was found to have a small sachet with cannabis grass. He was arrested.

Police Inspectors Gabriel Micallef and Spiridione Zammit charged Mr Trabule with simple possession of the drug, relapsing, attempting to smuggle the cannabis into jail and with failing to adhere to Monday's bail conditions.

Despite these charges, and the prosecution's objections, Magistrate Galea granted Mr Trabule bail, this time without imposing a deposit.

Lawyer Joe Mifsud appeared for the defendant.
