The new IVF Bill was more modern than the current one and was based on science, enabling the creation of new families, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said.

Parliament on Tuesday approved controversial amendments to the Embryo Protection Act with the Opposition voting against. The President's formal assent is now needed for the Bill to become law.

Dr Muscat said on Wednesday the new law would give hundreds of women, men, people and couples, the opportunity to form their families and procreate. We are proud that, yet again, we have made history together as mandated by the people.

Through this new law, the country was no longer discriminating against gay people, older women and single women.

"I am proud of our country, of the decision you made with the mandate you gave us to implement, yet again we are on the good side of history," Dr Muscat said.

Lawyer Tonio Azzopardi, in his personal capacity, has filed a constitutional application arguing, among other things, that the amendments should be declared null because they breached constitutional provisions on the right to life and respect for human life in all its stages.

Pro-life groups have been resisting the Bill.
