Italy has started extradition proceedings against a Romanian national who is in prison in Malta after having been convicted of theft.

Ilie Nicolau, 29, is serving a three-year sentence after having been convicted, in March last year, of a series of thefts and shoplifting.

Italy is seeking his extradition to face charges of involvement in organised crime.

Nicolau appeared in court this morning in connection with the extradition request. He consented to his extradition.
