Two Italian teenagers this morning admitted to stealing the handbag of an elderly woman while she walked in Sliema yesterday.

The two young men, aged 16 and 17 from Palermo, admitted to stealing the bag of the woman, in her 70s, during a snatch and grab.

Police Inspector Jonathan Ransley said that the boys had committed the crime during a "moment of folly" and had returned the bag to the woman.

Magistrate Francesco Depasquale told the young men they should be ashamed of themselves for targeting an elderly woman. He said that, had it not been for their young age, he would send them to jail.

He gave them a six month jail term suspended for four years.
