To celebrate its 10th anniversary, the St Julian’s Choral Group will be holding a concert with La Sisilla Choir from Montecchio Maggiore.

The Italian choir was founded in 1959 by Walfrido Calgaro and was originally composed of male members only singing mountain songs. Today, it has grown into an ensemble made up of both men and women members who perform popular poliphonic music.

La Sisilla Choir has taken part in several performances across Europe, including at Alton in the UK in 2007 forthe twinning festivities between the communes of Alton and Montecchio Maggiore. The choir has also performed in Altoftern and Lucerne in Switzerland, and in Croatia, Belgium, Hungary and Germany.

The choir’s visit to Malta is being organised as part of an exchange visit made possible following an invitation made last year to the St Julian’s Choral Group by La Sisilla Choir.

Through this, the Maltese choir was asked to participate in an annual concert, referred to as the rassegna annuale, in which a number of choirs from Italy and other European countries take part.

The St Julian’s Choral Group visited Montecchio Maggiore last October, when the choir had the opportunity to also visit historical sites both in Monteccchio Maggiore and in nearby regions.

The upcoming concert will include the participation of La Sisilla Choir and brief contributions from the St Julian’s Choral Group, the University Junior College Orchestra (under the direction of Mro Manoel Pirotta) and the Achafellas Quartet.

The concert will be held next Sunday at 8pm at St Julian’s parish church.
