The modernisation of the IT sector and the swift development of new technologies have resulted in a shift in IT employment patterns. Increased competition has created an increasing need for flexibility and efficiency, opposing the "job for life" mentality of the past.

Companies are driving change as they strive to reduce costs and better their services.

IT professionals are driving change with their need for better, more flexible working hours and more choice on the type of projects they take on.

The boom in the IT sector has resulted in increased competitiveness for projects. Companies are recognising the need for innovation by offering specialised skills and services that are normally not part of their core business. These services create a requirement for specific technical skills for each individual project. Particularly in the case of short-term projects, the best strategy would be to employ these skills on a short-term basis for the duration of the job. Assembling the correct combination of expertise or facilities may require a lot of resources that affect the company's ability to compete for the project.

Alternative forms of employment such as staff leasing have several advantages for employers. They make it possible for a company to handle rush situations and temporary assignments on short notice, without incurring costs that may undermine competitiveness. Advertising and lengthy recruitment processes are not necessary and employees can be reserved according to need and for the duration of the actual job. The company can afford to be more opportunistic as staff leasing reduces fixed and administrative costs as well as taxation expenses.

Staff leasing enables companies to reduce costs of re-training employees as staffing companies provide access to skilled workers with the expertise required. This improves the company's efficiency, shortens project deadlines and reduces overhead costs.

Diversifying working patterns can also be beneficial to employees. IT professionals are adapting to the changes in the labour market by taking a more consultative role in careers and working through agencies on specific projects. Not only does this allow them to selectively choose the projects they are involved in but this also enables them to gain project experience and a deeper skills base in specific technical areas. These professionals are able to work hours that are suited to their needs and that are more flexible than conventional arrangements.
