The Aquatic Sports Association (ASA) last night said that Maltese waterpolo clubs will reconvene for an extraordinary general meeting this month to discuss the participation of foreign players in local competitions.

ASA president Robbie Ebejer told The Times that after discussions between club presidents and members of the council it was decided to hold another meeting for Division One and Two club delegates on January 28. The main topic on the agenda will be foreign players.

During the 2007 annual general meeting, held a few weeks back in Lija, local clubs voted against the recruitment of non-Maltese players for the 2008 domestic competitions.

It was reported recently that two clubs, Marsascala and Otters, who are in favour of foreign players, challenged this decision. They argued that the ruling goes against EU regulations and the fundamental human rights of waterpolo players.
