With excitement at fever pitch ahead of the World Cup which kicks off in South Africa on Friday, Patrick Cooke hit the streets of Valletta to find out who will be watching and which teams the Maltese will be rooting for.

Carmen Camilleri, 40, Luqa

I might watch some of the interesting games.

I support Italy but, honestly, I don't know if they have a chance.

I don't normally watch football and my husband is the same.

I won't be celebrating in the streets if Italy win.

Kurt Neil Gatt, 9, Żebbuġ

I'll be watching it at home.

I like Germany because they have good players, especially Bastian Schweinsteiger, Miroslav Klose and ##Mario Gomez.

I think Germany will win, but if not, then perhaps Brazil or South Africa.

I would like South Africa or one of the African teams to win so they get some money.

Joseph Marmara, 48, Qormi

I'll be watching the games after work.

I hope England win.

Perhaps Brazil are better than England technically, but I think they have what it takes and Wayne Rooney is going to score many goals.

Italy will be in the last eight but I can't imagine them winning this time.

Sylvia Buttiġieġ, 54, Birkirkara

As long as my husband is interested, I'll watch the World Cup because I like watching football with him.

I support Italy and hope they win. When they won last time I was celebrating on the streets, of course! I've heard that England could win it, but I don't know if that's true as I'm not that keen on football apart from the World Cup. I quite like England but for as long as my husband likes Italy then so will I.

Reno Attard, 65, Sta Luċija

I love football so I'll definitely be watching. I support Germany, because I worked in Dortmund about 30 years ago as a soldier. Germany can win it; they are one of the favourites along with Brazil and Spain. England have a chance because Wayne Rooney is very dangerous. England are better than Italy at the moment. I'll be watching it at home because my family want me there. My sons support England and Italy so we'll watch it together and joke around. If Germany win the World Cup I'll go out in my car with my Germany banner and drive around Malta. And I won't be the only one; there are many Germany fans here.

Doreen Sammut, 35, Naxxar

I definitely won't watch it; I don't like football at all and I have better things to do. But if I have to choose a team I'll support Germany because my husband does.

Josef Zammit, 16, Paola

I'll definitely be watching with my friends.

I like Italy and we can win it again this year.

Form doesn't matter, we're four times world champions and that's enough.

Argentina and Brazil also have a chance of winning.

Roderick Vella, 15, Żabbar

Of course I'll be watching the World Cup. Isn't that a silly question?

I like England and I think they can win.

They have good players, especially Steven Gerrard; he's my favourite player as I'm a Liverpool fan.

Argentina and Spain also have the potential to win it.

My friends and I are going to watch the matches on a big screen at my house.

James Sammut, 38, Naxxar

I'll definitely be watching each game, and I'll take leave from work if possible.

I have loved Germany since the age of 10.

We have a supporters' club in Ħamrun so I'll watch the games there.

It's difficult to say if we have a chance of winning the tournament, but I always say that when the players wear the German shirt they are capable of anything.

It's going to be tough without the injured Michael Ballack, but knowing the German spirit I'm sure they will make it to at least the semi-finals.

I think Argentina could win because they have an awesome attack, but their defence is totally rubbish.

The champions could be Argentina, Germany... or Italy as is always the case.
