Irish President Mary McAleese said today that Ireland would remain neutral over the Libya dispute and will not send troops or military equipment to the area. However, she said, Ireland supported the UN decision and interventions which other countries were granting in this framework.

Speaking at an activity held by the Europa Economic Forum, McAleese stressed that Ireland only provided troops for peacekeeping operations, as was the case in Lebanon.

The President said that the Libyan authorities should "take very seriously" the no-fly zone agreed by the UN, because it was a measure to protect the life of Libyan people.
