Ira Losco’s Eurovision performance in Tuesday’s semi-final has served as inspiration for Maltese pianist John Cutajar prompting him to play a cover version of the song Walk on Water.

John uploaded a video of himself playing the song on his Facebook page.

Speaking to timesofmalta.com this afternoon, the 15-year-old, who is a student at St Augustine College, said he was overwhelmed with how much attention his video was getting.

“I’ve done covers of local artists before. I covered a Red Elektrik song recently. I think Ira’s song is fantastic and so I decided to work on the cover,” the young man, who has been playing the piano for the past nine years, said.

As he did not have any sheet music to follow, John listened to the song for four times to familiarise himself with the melody.

He then played the tune for 12 times, perfecting it, before settling on the final version.

“With local music, I don’t have access to the actual music sheets. So instead, I listen to the songs I want to cover over and over.”

An avid Eurovision fan, Mr Cutajar said he did not know whether Ira Losco had heard the cover yet, but hoped she had.

Wishing her good luck, he said he believed Malta had a very good chance of making it to the top.
