An internal investigation has been ordered by the Energy Ministry into yesterday’s explosion at Enemalta’s sub-station in St Margaret Street, Sliema, during which two workers were seriously injured.

Enemalta said yesterday the accident happened as the employees completed planned maintenance and were in the process of switching on the substation.

The ministry said this evening that the investigation should determine what led to the incident and what can be done for such incidents to be avoided.

Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi and Enemalta chairman Charles Mangion visited the injured employees at Mater Dei Hospital. The minister also visited the sub-station and spent some time with the other workers.

A magisterial investigation is also being held.
