Alec Invernizzi, 18, will be playing in the Italian handball Serie B league next season after helping his team CUS Genova to promotion.

Without doubt, Invernizzi's season was an excellent one as he scored 61 times for CUS Genova, a club that used to form part of the local university but is now administered by an independent body. The team, at present, is ranked in the top position within the Liguria region.

Invernizzi is a former Aloysians player. In Italy, besides playing handball, he is also studying naval engineering at the University of Genova.

After playing for the Maltese students' team in the FISEC Games, Invernizzi is likely to make his debut for the national team in December when Malta play in the EHF Challenge Trophy at the University Sports Hall.

"My experience abroad is helping me a lot not only in terms of handball but also in my personal life," he said. "I think handball is 'chess in movement' where team spirit is a very fundamental factor.

"But, I guess, handball deserves more prominence. It is a healthy sport and should attract more youngsters to its fold.

"Now, I will seek to do even better next season and give a better contribution to CUS Genova and the national team in the EHF Challenge. No team from Liguria has managed to play higher than in the Serie B in Italy... we will try to establish a new milestone for the region."
